The New Nightwatch Version 1 (Voss)

 Dutch painter Ernst Voss is painting his own interpretation of Rembrandt's 'The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq' known as the Nightwatch.
Voss’s theory is completely different to any other known art historical interpretation of the true meaning of the Nightwatch.
His theory is based on the assumption that Rembrandt painted his masterpiece as an allegory for his own life.
This has left Voss free to move figures, add figures and delete figures, while still painting in his own figurative painting style, which was inspired by the later works of Rembrandt.


A Brief History of ‘The New Nightwatch’
February 2004: Voss is given a blank canvas used by The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam,
to test the relocation senerio of the "Nightwatch" due to the renovation of the The Rijksmuseum,
this canvas is the same size as the ‘Nightwatch’ including its frame
August 2004 : Voss starts painting in Hazerwoude Dorp
As close as he can get to Rembrandt's birth place Leiden
September 2004 : moves the painting to 'The Gallery' in Amsterdam
A symbolic gesture echoing Rembrandt's life.
October 2004: Continues to paint in Amsterdam
November 2004: Is offered a space in the The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, and moves his painting there
This is the outcome of intense negotiations between the 'The Gallery" and VanVliet Construction Company
December 2004 : Try’s to sell the painting at the Millionaires Fair
Continues to paint in the The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
On the exact same location where Rembrandt's Nightwatch is normally exhibited (due to renovation of the The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam)
January 2005; Invited by the painters Aldert Mantje and Jan Maris to move the Painting to temporary workshop at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Members of the public can observe from day to day how the 3.80cm x 4.54 cm painting progresses.

February 2005: Voss has reached his financial limit, forcing him to sell
small study's of fragments of "The Nightwatch 2004" to ensure the continuation of this project !!!
